A Hidden Sufi Centre Near Ahmedabad In Gujarat

SarkhejRoza is a little known mosque, just 8 kilometres from the metropolitan city of Ahmedabad, in Makraba village. It was built in the beginning of the Sultanate era in India.

The most powerful Sufi saint Ganj Baksh lived here.He is believed to have lived for 111 years and spent most of his last years in the calm environment of Sarkhej. The myths and miracles of his teachings are still experienced by the visitors visiting this place. It is believed that the great ruler Ahmed Shah established his capital on the banks of river Sabarmati upon instruction by the saint.

It has been compared to the Acropolis of Athens by the famed architect Le Corbusier, who was awestruck by seeing the architecture of the mosque. The complex of the SarkhejRoza is spread over a large area, with gardens all over the four sides of the structure. The gardens are interspersed now with human settlement, but the main complex continues to exude the glory of the past.

The architecture is a perfect synthesis of the prevalent Hindu-Islamic influence of the time. The profusion of pillars, brackets and ringed domes depict the Islamic architecture whereas the motifs and ornamentation are indicative of Hindu designs. The tombs, mosques and palaces located around the large tank in Sarkhej gives the visitors a feel of the 15th century period.
