Rare orchids and birds, pristine wilderness and cultural fiesta, Tamenglong in Manipur is a traveller’s paradise. Little known among the tourists, this hidden dream is a beauty preserved in its original glory.

As the river Barak passes through this hilly region, it forms a cascading series of seven waterfalls, that can put any destination on this planet to shame. Flawless and innocent, this place has a character of its own, and you could easily forget your own self amidst its beauty.

The village is inhabited by the Zeliangrong community who speak the Rongmei language. Tropical evergreens and bamboo plantations make it a scene right out of Avatar.

It is also called the Land of the Hornbill. Besides the Great Pied Hornbill, rare species of flora, fauna and orchids have made it their home. Visit here to get a sight of epiphytic andlithophitic vegetation.

An attraction here is the Zeilad Lake, set atop a hill. Its waters are home to many water fowl. It has been a part of a protected wildlife sanctuary. The place is surrounded by the Buning meadows that turn the ground into a haven of orchids and flowers. The sparkling brooks add to the wonder of the place.

The 650 metres long Tharon cave also draws those with an adventurous inclination. Enthusiasts can explore the cave with a map drawn outside the cave walls.

You can also visit the place during one of the local festivals. They are aunique and colourful affair. The most important celebration is Gudui-Ngai. This festival marks the see-sowing season in April and people drink juice (dui) of Ginger (Gu) and play games like tug of war. Other festivals like Banruhmei and Tarang also interesting in their customs.

You can reach Tamenglong by road and rail, as it is 160 km away from the state capital city Imphal. The best time to visit is from October to March, and the monsoons could be avoided.
