As you drive down the NH 66, you may have to watch out for the Murdeshwar exit. If you chance upon it, you are the precipice of a great travel experience.

Murdeshwar is a name for an avatar of Shiva, and very aptly named after this place, as the major dominating factor here is the largest Shiva statue facing the beach. The Arabian sea shimmers on its three sides, and the arrival through the Western Ghats led an enchantment of its own.

The Gopura of the Murudeshwar temple rises 20 stories high. The entire surface of this temple is covered in the most intricate and detailed carvings. Built atop a hill, the majestic life-size elephants at the entrance speak of the great times gone by. The compound of the temple has been modernized except the sanctum sanctorum, which retains its original form. The main deity of the temple is the Sri Mridesa Linga, which is believed to be a part of the original Atma Linga.

Behind the temple complex of Murudeshwar, is a fort that finds its origins in the era of the Vijayanagara Kings. It is said to have been renovated after that by none other than Tipu Sultan.

You can also take an hour’s ride to Gokarna town. It is on what was once an unspoiled beach near the estuary of the river Aghanashini. Due to less frequent stompers, the beach has maintained its rustic pristine beauty.

Murudeshwar has some of the best waterfront activities in the region. A truly memorable experience is in store if you take an evening boat ride into the beach. Schools of dolphins jump into the air against the setting sun.
Murudeshwar Junction railway station is well connected with all of Southern railways. The nearest airport is in Mangalore. You can also take a pleasant ride from Goa or Bangalore.
