White shimmering surfaces as far as you can see make you think this is what the moon’s surface might look like. The sands create a beautiful mirage of the glittering lights and boutique camels. So, what is Rann Utsav?

It is a cultural festival organised by the government of Gujarat in the white marshy salt desert of Kutch. Vendors set up pop up market for local handicrafts, arts, kutcha embroidery work, cuisine. Evening are spent in the delectable company of folk music and dance. It is an opportunity to travel in time and immerse yourself in a complete experience of a rich culture and heritage.

When is it organised?

It is held from 1st November to 20th February. But the best time to visit is on the eve of a full moon night, so you can see the full moon rise over the horizon of the white desert. It throws an other-worldly glow over the entire desert.

Rann Utsav festival also organises activities like Para Motoring, ATV, archery and star gazing. You need a police permit at the entrance to the festival area, but that is easily available if you are carrying an identity card.

You can reach Rann by a 2 hours car ride from Bhuj. Bhuj is well connected to major cities by rail and air. Rental cars cost approximately INR 3000 for a day in the area. You can stay in the luxury tents organised for the festival. A more economical accommodation is available in near by villages or Bhuj by Jain hostels and boarding.

While you are visiting Rann for the festival, you can also visit the Kala Dongar mountain in the vicinity. It holds one of the rare sites of a magnetic hill. There is also Vijay Palace enroute from Bhuj to Rann. Birding enthusiasts can visit Narayan Sarovar lake near Bhuj.
