Many of us have an insatiate wanderlust for the Himalayan mountains. But if you have been to Kasol often, and are looking for something new in the region of Himachal, Chalal could be your saviour.

The village of Chalal is located at an altitude of around 5366 feet above sea-level and is located on the banks of the River Parvati.

A trail hidden by tall pine trees leads from Kasol to Chalal. It is short hike of 30 mins. The trek starts as one crosses over a cable suspended bridge over the Parvati river. The river flows beside a major part of this scenic trail. Chalal is also a good option for those who want to avoid the more arduous trek from Kasol to Malana.

Apricot blossoms stud this quaint little village. Surprisingly, it has been turned by previous travellers into a Bob Marley country. He can be seen everywhere, on Tibetan flags and graffiti walls. At night, the village turns into a hub for trance and psychedelic parties, with all the right ingredients. The major crowd puller for these parties are world class DJ’s who come all the way to this beautiful valley just to perform.

This village is also one of the few earlier ones to shed its winter cloak. So spring comes early to Chalal with all its hues and colours. So, it is a great place if you want to start trekking early in summer.

Nearly all the houses in Chalal are old, traditional wooden ones which are made keeping in mind the severe winter and heavy monsoon. That’s why all the houses have their ground floor only for storage and to keep their animals. The families live in the upper section. Those villagers that do not rear sheep, are occupied in cannabis plantation.

Another attraction in Chalal is the river side cafes. With the sound of the gushing river, and panoramic views, these cafes can beat the widely acclaimed Riveria. The best time to visit Chalal is from March to mid-June.

If you love the mountains, but want to avoid rigorous trekking, Chalal is an ideal place to relax and unwind.

Chalal is only accessible by foot from Kasol. Regular buses ply to Kasol from Pathankot, the nearest railway station.
