A stunning and mystical architectural wonder hides from the view of tourists in Kashmir. Martand is a little known sun temple, beyond the popularity of Modhera in Gujarat and Konark in Odisha.

Built in the 8th century, the Martand Sun Temple is a marvellous testament to the architectural achievements of Kashmir’s ancient Karkota Dynasty. In front of the royal palace of Raja Ranadatiya, this temple was constructed by LalitadatiyaMuktapida and was dedicated to Surya Bhagwan, the Sun God. Much of the temple was destroyed by Islamic ruler SikandarButshikan in the early 15th century, and it has stood in ruins ever since.

The Martand Sun Temple is built in nagara style of temple architecture. The style of the construction of the temple and the skill exhibited in its construction is rare in history. This temple has been built with strong and square limestones and exhibits the pillars of Greek pattern.

The Archaeological Survey of India has declared the Martand Sun Temple as a site of national importance in Jammu and Kashmir.If you are visiting the popular sites of Pahalgam and Aru Valley near Srinagar, you are not far from this epic ruin.

The best time to visit Martand is during the summer months, as the site is snowed in during winter. You can drive to Martand in a couple of hours from Srinagar.
