While travelling, most of us want a window seat, and why not? At least I do. The lovely view of the city or town beneath, while taking off or landing always fascinates us, don’t they? The next thing I want when it comes to choosing seat is to get it a bit away from the wings. Why? As that gives me good photos to click for instagram. Different people have different things in mind when choosing their seats. Manish Singh, a Senior Executive with MCX, Kolkata, is a frequent flyer. On being asked about his seat preference, he said, “I prefer seats in the end. Usually there is least disturbance when you sleep. At the back very few seats are taken in most cases, unless the flight is full. Mostly families choose front seats or middle seats. Kids make a lot of noise. The seats in the end are usually quieter.” Ragesh Radhakrishnan, an IT professional who travels quite a lot for pleasure, prefers seats in the front. He says, “The front seats always. That way I can go out faster and avoid the rush.”

While good sleep, deplaning faster are the things people worry about, safety is usually least of their concerns. Yet, when a few people give a thought to that aspect, they are of the opinion that the seats near the wings are the safest. However, contrary to that belief researches have revealed that it is the seats towards the end of a plane that are the safest. There was a documentary movie called The Crash that talked about the safest plane seats. The producers of The Crash had a Boeing 727 carrying cameras and dummies with breakable bones arranged. They staged a deliberate crash into the Sonoran Desert in Mexico. The experiment revealed some shocking facts. As the plane hit the ground, the first 11 rows from the front went kaput. Yes, that is precisely where the business class seats are. Although a single experimental analysis is disputedly decisive, there was a survey by sunshine.co.uk. The survey bared that after the results of the study was out there was a sharp fall in the number of people enquiring about business class seats. The study further revealed that the seats close to the back of the flight were the safest.

According to planecrashinfo.com the chances if being killed on a flight is 1 in 4.7 million. Fasten your seatbelt and choose your seats towards the back of a flight. It might take you sometime to deplane but that is where the safest seats are. Fly safe!
