A vast expanse of water, as still as a mirror. Even the reflections of the surrounding hills at the edge of the waters do not move. The still lake reflects the sky above in an exact approximation. And a wooden deck leads into the centre of the lake. The whole setting is surreal.

Even if it might seem like a landscape out of the land of the Great Lakes in America, such a place actually exists in India. At Chikmagalur in Karnataka, Lake Ayyanakerre is a beautiful spot that no traveller should skip.

Not only should you visit this lake because of its natural beauty, but also because it has a rich historical background. Rukmangada Raya constructed this lake in the ancient times. It was renovated in 1156 AD by the Hoysala kings. According to a legend, the lake was guarded by Honna Billa. One night, a goddess appeared, and told him that the lake would breach. He requested the goddess to wait till he evacuated the village, but instead he sacrificed himself, keeping her waiting till the end of time. And thus, Honna Billa lay his life for the lake and the villagers. Even today, the locals pay homage to him, and recount this folklore in every home.

The lake offers a dramatic view of sunrise and sunset, with the lake waters turning into different magical hues, and the sun rays play out a drama in the sky.
