Goa is known for its sun and sand. In more recent times, it has become an emerging destination for monsoon treks. But there are many other things that travelers should know about to enjoy the local cultures and tradition of Goa.

As part of a fascination ritual, men throw stones at flags and make a day of it at Bonderam festival on the Divar island in Goa. The name of the festival,Bonderm, originated from ‘bandeira,’ which means flag in Portuguese. Every year, it is celebrated on the fourth Saturday of the month of August.

The festival has interesting origins. The village on the island initially had three communities, Goathias, Sao Matias and Piedade. The latter two groups were frequently involved in fights over property matters. These disputes often ended with bloody duels. To solve this matter, a system of demarcation of boundaries using flags was introduced by the Portuguese. However, the rival groups sometimes knocked down the flag with a stone. In memory of this practice, the people of Divar Island engage in a mock fight during the celebration of Bonderm festival.

They use a special bamboo toy called ‘Fotash’ to throw berries or popcorn on flags. Today the festival is celebrated amid much music, dancing, and fanfare. There is even a flag parade, starting from the village square, through the peripheries. People participate in different competitions like fancy dress, food stalls, and cultural events.
