For the far-reaching implications it would have on the state’s politics, Tamil Nadu expected the 2G verdict more fervently than the rest of the country. Of all the 17 accused only two, A Raja and Kanimozhi from DMK, were projected as the face of the case in the media all these years. The case had its share of impact in elections in recent past and the verdict was likely to influence many things from the future of DMK to equations in poll alliances in the state.
It seemed that a delegate of party functionaries from DMK and supporters of A Raja and Kanimozhi thronged the special court in Delhi on the day of 2G verdict. Tamil television channels were busy switching visuals from Delhi to Chennai and vice versa, but Delhi visuals weren’t any different from Chennai’s, thanks to these DMK leaders and party cadres present in Delhi. On the verdict day, A Raja was seen in his usual white shirt and dhoti, but Kanimozhi had chosen DMK’s colours, black and red and television channels’ centred around these two.
When the verdict was out leading Tamil Weekly Anandha Vikatan announced “All are acquitted” in its Twitter handle. DMK’s working president MK Stalin in his tweet said, “Deeply delighted by the historical Judgment by Hon’ble Special Judge Thiru O.P.Saini, CBI Court in 2G Spectrum case”. “The blot on Congress and DMK is wiped out”, Tamil Nadu Congress’ state president Thirunavukkarasu tweeted. VCK president Thirumavalavan asked for registering a criminal case against former CAG Vinod Rai.

Many forgot it was the day of by-election to RK Nagar assembly constituency in the din of the 2G verdict. DMK cadres were jubilant and the sign of relief in party leaders’ faces was obvious. Surprisingly TTV Dinakran came in support of archrivals DMK in 2G verdict. PMK and Tamil Nadu BJP were sceptical in their comments. PMK founder Ramadoss in his Tweet said, “If there weren’t any irregularities in 2G spectrum allocation why the SC scrapped them.” BJP state president Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan tweeted that this doesn’t mean that Congress is free of scam charges.
Social media was also abuzz with comments, counter comments and the meme creators had a field day. In short, while the 2G verdict had caught its rivals unawares it has given DMK the much needed fillip.
