Emancipation: A Gift For Indian Women

Can the Emancipation Law set women free?

Emancipation: A Gift For Indian Women

Our Indian society is largely male-dominated. Most women do not have real freedom. Our constitution provides for the equality of men and women. However, in reality, there is often a denial of equality for women in large parts of India. Feudal societies of India either kill a baby girl or let her live without any freedom. In many regions, the parents’ abuse girls for being born or kill them soon after birth.

An ‘Emancipation Law’ can set them free from such abuse. Emancipation means liberty; to be set legally free from guardians. As per our law, any female above 18 years is a major and is empowered to lead her own life. But, our law does not give a female, full emancipation. Indian women can strive hard for empowerment but not for emancipation. Emancipation would provide justice in many cases, but in the Indian court, no matter how worse a situation sounds, a girl can never get emancipated. The Law of emancipation is practiced in all other countries but not in India mainly because of the feudal mindset and culture which does not permit emancipation of women. This feudal mindset needs to change.

There are many initiatives taken to save the life of a baby girl but no initiative to care for the safety and well-being of a girl after being born. Every two minutes, there is a crime report against females in this country. Crimes ranging from rape, domestic violence, mental harassment to killing an unborn baby girl. In India, people worship the Goddesses Laxmi and Durga, but the same people abuse their very own daughter, sister, mother or wife. The life of a female in our country is full of struggles. A female has to fight to live even before she is born.

Emancipation is an ideal gift for females who are abused and tortured by their very own. But, it should be noted that ideas, like not getting married or not giving birth to a child, are not emancipation, in the true sense of the term. These are natural instincts. All of us need love from others. We cannot live alone or survive with money or freedom, alone. Nevertheless, the law for emancipation should be introduced in India. Time to ponder, ‘Even after saving a girl child, are we really saving her?’
