In The Making: ‘Thalaivar’ Rajinikanth

Though he hasn’t revealed much of his plans, it is evident that Rajinikanth has indeed embarked on his political journey

It has been barely a week after Rajinikanth announced his entry into politics and the actor is making a steady progress on the way to launching his own party. As people happily ushered in the New Year on the last day of 2017 it was Rajinikanth’s formal announcement on his political entry that enthralled his fans and supporters. He announced it to thunderous applause and cheers during a meeting with his fans. In a plain statement Rajinikanth said that he was entering politics and confirmed that he will float his own party which will contest in all the 234 assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu. He added that his will be spiritual politics.

Rajinikanth didn’t unveil the name of his party or make public the ideological bases on which his party will be constituted. Given the fact that Tamil Nadu will not go to assembly polls before 2021 May, it was little disappointing to his fans because they have to wait for about three and a half years before they see their ‘superstar’ donning the role of actual ‘thalaivar’ (leader). The actor also didn’t make clear of his strategies for the interim period. Since the State is going to have local-body elections soon and the next parliamentary elections are due next year, the long wait seemed meaningless.

But there was news to cheer about the very next day. The actor launched the mobile app ‘RajiniMandram’ to enable his fans and general public enrol themselves in his fan club, All India Rajinikanth Fans Association. This fan club is expected to serve as the base for the actor’s future political party. On that day Rajinikanth also launched a twitter account ‘@officialairrm,’ and a web page, www.rajinimandram.org. It is reported that over 3 lakh people have registered on these platforms so far.

On Wednesday Rajinikanth addressed the media briefly. In the informal address he declined to explain what he meant by spiritual politics. “I myself do not know,” was his reply when reporters asked him to specify when he would announce the name and symbol of his proposed party. The same evening he visited DMK president M Karunanithi. The megastar said he took the blessings of the veteran politician who had congratulated him for his political entry.

Though he hasn’t revealed much of his plans, it is evident that Rajinikanth has indeed embarked on his political journey. It seems he is inching towards his complete transformation into a political leader and it is only a matter of time before people see the emergence of ‘thalaivar’ Rajinikanth.
