Incentives push us to do better. But not all incentives that work have to be monetary. Some of us are more driven by awards, than rewards. So, if you are one of those, who are driven more by recognition than salary packages, then read on to score the ‘Employee of the Year’ award this time around.

Here’s what you can do to get a leverage over other competitors.

Set Your Own Goals

Don’t wait for the boss or manager to give you deadlines. Set your own KRAs (Key Result Areas). Even if these are set for you by the manager, you can go beyond, and set your own goals. This initiative and motivation will not go unnoticed, especially when every one else is busy following the KRAs only.

Be A Team Player

Being competitive does not mean playing alone. You need to ensure that you are compassionate and supportive to your team. Cross-functional empathy is necessary. Firstly, to be a good team player, and secondly, the reciprocal support will make your performance better.

Be An Asset More Than An Employee

Preksha Seth, Cofounder of Utopian Media, says “An employee is defined as a person working for a salary. Every employer looks for a resource in an employee. A resource is someone who puts their heart and soul into his work, who makes the company more efficient.”

Learn To Say “No”

No boss likes a Yes Man. A good boss would appreciate it if you have your opinion about things. Asking questions when you are stuck shows that you care about your work. It can be dangerous to agree to more if it impacts your ability to satisfy the job requirements that you were hired to do. If it is an assignment that will detract from your core responsibilities, overwhelm you, and compromise your ability to consistently deliver a high quality of work, then it is better to say no to it.

Discipline Is Always Noticed

It does not hurt to be at work on time. Punctuality, consistency, honesty are some of the values that are a must when ‘Employee of the Year’ are considered. Latecomers and lazy workers are rarely given the prestige.

These five skills will give an edge over others when the bosses consider a candidate for the best employee.
