Sometimes it may happen that you are offered the job immediately after or during the interview. This can be quite an exciting proposition, especially if you have been waiting for this kind of an amazing opportunity. If this has been your dream job, and you have been looking forward to it eagerly, then it is a great situation.

But if you are in the middle of jumping jobs, and are just going to interviews to test the waters, then such a job offer can throw you off your game. You might not know how to respond, if such an interview leads to a job offer on the spot.

Here are three things to consider when you have to decide about a job on the spot.

It May Not Be Right To Expect A Response From You

You have to realise that you don’t have to respond right away under the pressure of the situation. Your default response should be to ask for more time to consider. It might be possible that the position has been empty for a long time, and the organisation just wants someone to fill in right away. But you have to consider whether you are the right fit for such a scenario. It is better to take time to consider the offer, then feel trapped by the situation.

Anand Vaishnav, Senior Manager of Content Marketing, Hungama Digital Media Entertainment, says “It can be very tempting to immediately say yes, but I would recommend to play it with some calm and ask for 48 hours. Evaluate your role and responsibilities with respect to existing profile and where you will rank in the hierarchy in the new place. In such scenarios salary negotiation will not be much of a challenge as they are obviously keen to have you on board, so don’t lose sight of the profile as sometimes there may be a lot between the lines which you might miss out in the excitement of the moment. In the longer run it is those finer details which lead to dissatisfaction, even if the salary jump is good.”

Ask Questions About The Offer

You can question the recruiter or the interviewer about why they have decided to give you the jib offer so quickly. This is actually a great opportunity to learn a lot about what the job entails, and how the organisation works. You can ask about the team members, about the time you will be offered before you shift jobs and what about the interview prompted them to give you the offer.

Be Polite And Humble In Your Conversation

You have to be careful not to let the offer get to your head, and misuse your leverage to create an unhealthy work image. Even if you need time to consider the offer, ask so and other questions politely, without seeming snobbish or smug about the offer. Being impolite at this stage could lead them to question their choice about you.

These factors will help you respond to an interview if you are offered a job on the spot.
