Aamir Khan and ex wife Reena Dutta’s love story is like a typical Bollywood romance, a fully filmy romance with all the twists! There is nothing more fitting than their love story to end this overly hyped day of love; Valentine’s Day!

Their love story makes for an interesting read. Aamir and Reena’s love story started right from home. The two lived opposite each other’s building and their windows opened out to each others. It was like the ‘Mere saamne wali khidki mein…’ situation. It’s not difficult to guess where Aamir spent most of his time at home, yes in front of the window!

Aamir fell head over heels in love with Reena and proposed to her only to be sadly rejected. He gathered all the courage and went straight to her and told her that he loved her, hoping she felt the same. But sadly that didn’t happen and Aamir was heartbroken. However, he didn’t give up even though he tried to avoid the window. After trying several times to get her to love him back, Aamir’s last resort was a letter written in his own blood!

He thought the love letter written in blood would impress Reena but instead she gave him a piece of her mind and told him what he did was not right. But eventually Aamir did manage to win her heart. If you thought everything was easy after that, here’s more.

When Aamir Khan gave a love letter written in blood , she gave him a piece of her mind!

The two were so madly in love and wanted to get married but they had to wait till Aamir turned a legal age as Reena was 18 but Aamir was only 20. So they waited patiently for 14 March 1986, when he turned 21. The very same day, they took a bus to the marriage registration office and secretly got married.

During our conversation at Aamir’s home recently, he told us that there were only three witnesses to his marriage. One was his childhood friend Satya, the second was Satya’s wife,Svati Chakravarthy, who directed Aamir’s Rubaru Roshni and the third witness was Satya’s cousin, Anand.

Aamir said, “My marriage with Reena was the most economical marriage. I paid 50 paisa for Bus no. 211 which stops at Bandra station. Then I climbed up to the bridge and walked to the highway, after crossing the highway, there is a Griha Nirman Bhavan, where the marriage registrar sits. We were married at the registrar’s office in just 15 minutes! I spent only ten rupees for my wedding. We got married secretly and that marriage we had only three witnesses in the civil marriage. One was Satya, second was Svati and third was Anand, Satya’s cousin.”

Svati, who was also present at Aamir’s house during this conversation recollected the whole incident with a smile and said,“The secret reception was held at Satya’s house because his mum was away at school since she was a principal and his father was at office. We celebrated with Mangola and peda.”

The story doesn’t end there! Once they were done with the formalities of registering their marriage, the two had to go back to their respective houses as they had not told either of their families about it. Another reason was also because Aamir was not yet working or earning and Reena too was still studying. It was a secret marriage until their families finally got to know one fine day, just before Aamir was to be launched in Qayamat Se Qyamat Tak.

Wait, the story still does not end there. If you thought now that the families knew about it, everything was settled. Well! not quite yet! Aamir’s paternal uncle Nasir Hussain gave him a job as an assistant director and Aamir worked on films Manzil Manzil and Zabardast etc. Aamir had never thought he would act and was happy being behind the camera but Nasir Hussain could think of no one but Aamir to play the lead in his son Mansoor Khan’s directorial debut Qayamat se Qayamat Tak.

Aamir was given the role but on the other hand he had to promise to keep his marriage a secret as Mansoor feared that his film might not do well if the audience discovered that the hero of the film was a married man! So Aamir agreed to keep shut provided they let Reena be a part of the film too. That’s how she made a special appearance in the iconic Papa Kehte Hai song, where she is seen among the college student wearing a red dress.

Their love story lasted for almost 16 years, till sadly, the two went their separate ways due to differences. Aamir said, “Sometimes a relationship doesn’t work but I have a lot of love and respect for her.” Aamir has always stayed in touch with Reena who is also the mother of their two children Junaid and Ira. They share a special bond and it was evident when Aamir flew all the way back from Turkey where he was in the midst of promoting his film Secret Superstar, just to be a part of Reena’s 50th birthday celebrations.

Today, even though Aamir is married to Kiran Rao, they are all one big happy family. Like Aamir said, a Bollywood movie could be made on his life. “A film can actually be made on that love story of mine, maybe a biopic on my life! And Junaid can probably play my role,” (Joked Aamir).

A film on Aamir’s life would make an interesting watch for sure!
