Kamal Hassan – Born As Parthasarathy

One of the biggest names in Kollywood, Kamal Hassan was born to a Tamil-speaking Brahmin family as Parthasarathy. He started acting since four years of age and is a three-time National Award winner over the span of his career. He is recognized internationally as well and many of his movies have been nominated for the Oscars.

Rajnikanth – Born As Shivaji Rao Gaekwad

The ‘thalaiva’ was named Shivaji Rao Gaekwad by his Marathi-speaking parents who were based in Bangalore. He had taken up many odd jobs to support himself, such as a bus conductor. The renowned filmmaker K. Balachander had suggested ‘Rajnikanth’ as a screen name for Gaekwad at his debut movie “Apoorva Raagangal” in the 1980s.

Asha Kelunni Nair was born to a Malayalam-speaking family in Kochi, but has made a significant contribute to Kollywood during the 1980s. It is unknown why she changed her real name, but it sure has made her the most successful actress of her times in all the South Indian movie industries and Bollywood.

Suriya – Born As Saravaran Sivakumar

Suriya was born as the elder son to veteran actor Sivakumar, as Saravaran Sivakumar. He completed his graduation from Loyola College in Chennai and started working in a garments factory. He was persuaded into acting by his best friends, and he soon debuted in Vasanth’s “Nerukku Ner”.

Dhanush – Born As Venkatesh Prabhu

Dhanush won a National Award for the Best Actor for “Aadukalam”

Dhanush was named Venkatesh Prabhu by his director father, Kasthuri Raja. He was given the stage name Dhanush by filmmaker Selvaraghavan for his debut movie, “Thulluvadho Ilimai” and he later won a National Award for the Best Actor for “Aadukalam”.

Nayanthara – Born As Diane Mariam Kuriyan
