Freida Pinto : India’s Loss, Hollywood’s Gain?

She was rejected in India because people thought she didn’t look Indian!

Her role as Latika from Slumdog Millionaire will always be remembered and perhaps go down in history too. Her journey from a quintessential middle class working girl from Mumbai to one of the most celebrated Hollywood actresses has been an impressive one. Did you know that she had to face a lot of rejections as an actress and had even auditioned for Shah Rukh Khan’s Chak De India for which she was rejected! In one of her interviews Freida had mentioned that many times she got rejected as they felt she didn’t look Indian. Well, I wonder what they had to say post her success in Slumdog Millionaire where she played an Indian girl, Latika.

Today she is one of the most well-known actresses in Hollywood. Freida did not get bogged down with all the rejections that she met in her own country but she put all her efforts to look for suitable roles for herself in Hollywood. She found herself a Hollywood agent and educated herself on the ways the West worked and signed her second Hollywood film with Woody Allen called You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger. After that, there’s been no looking back for this talented actress.

While we all know that she’s worked with some of the most famous names in Hollywood, there are things from her personal life that you might not know. We’ve listed below some fun facts about this gorgeous actress’ personal life:

1. Freida Pinto is like you and me, an ordinary Indian girl, from an ordinary non – filmy family. She is the daughter of Sylvia Pinto, the principal of St’John’s school in Goregaon, Mumbai and Frederick Pinto, a senior branch manager at the Bank of Baroda in Mumbai. Freida is the younger of two siblings, she has an older sister, Sharon, who works for the NDTV news channel.

2. She graduated in arts with a major in English literature along with Psychology and Economics as her other two chosen subjects.

3. She is an accomplished dancer in Indian classical dance

4. When Sushmita Sen won Miss Universe 1994, Freida was 10 years old and that’s when she decided that she too wanted to be like Sushmita Sen. She wanted to be a model and be famous like her, Sushmita was her inspiration.

Freida’s upcoming films are Jungle Book: Origins and The Path, both of which are slated to release in 2018.

It’s ironic that while Freida has become one of the hottest Hollywood stars, and the critics in Hollywood can’t get over her beauty and think her beauty is exotic, it’s sad that her own country failed to celebrate her or give her the right roles she deserved or even recognize her talents. Incidents like these make you believe that maybe Kangana Ranaut is right about nepotism!

Here’s wishing this brilliant actress a very Happy Birthday! From all of us at HFT. May you fly higher.
