Here’s What Ranbir Kapoor Had To Say About Playing Sanjay Dutt In Sanju

The entire script of Sanju shocked Ranbir Kapoor!

Ranbir Kapoor’s most awaited film Sanju, based on the life of actor Sanjay Dutt is finally out and has been received very well. The response to the trailer and also Ranbir’s role has been overwhelming. His contemporaries from the industry have been full of praise for the trailer. But not many know how Ranbir felt while playing this character. Here’s all that you need to know about what

Ranbir felt while playing Sanju, right from the horse’s mouth!

On the opportunity to play this role

“Ever since I could remember I wanted to be a part of a movie and show it to the world and to get an opportunity like this and work with such genius’ is a privilege and an inspiration of sorts.”

On why he likes to limit acting like Sanjay Dutt only to the film

“I feel shy to imitate Sanjay Dutt outside of the film because I feel I am disrespecting him and it might sound like I am trying to mimic him. It’s different when I am acting in the film and playing him because when I am playing his part in the film, I am in costume and makeup and hair is styled that way etc.and that’s different.”

On the difficulties, he faced playing the role of Sanjay Dutt

I have always been a Sanjay Dutt fan, so for me, it was a fan trying to play his icon in a film. The hardest thing was to convince myself and be that I could play this part. I remember when Raju sir told me about this film, I didn’t have the confidence or the courage to play Sanjay Dutt. This is not an acting gig for me, I have not tried to showcase my talent in this film but I have just wanted to be a part of a story of a person whom I consider my icon. Who I consider a very flawed person but a good person. To tell his story and be him was quite incredible.

To understand his story, to understand his soul, to understand where he came from was the most difficult part even though I’ve observed him all my life. Putting on makeup, costumes, and a wig and look like someone is not difficult, it’s just resemblance.Having said that once I gained the confidence that I could do the role it was easier, I was inspired. The harder the scene the better it was for me as an actor. For me, the most difficult was the young Sanju, the many facets we had to show like his drug phase, losing his mother etc. and the most fun was the Munnabhai phase.

On his reaction when he first read the script of Sanju

The entire script of Sanju shocked me because the Sanjay Dutt I know was different, I’ve known him as a family friend, an older brother, a fan, a big action hero in his films like Khalnayak, the kind of style icon he is. It was only after I read about his life, his drug phase or how he faced it at such a young age, the passing away of his mother two or three days before his premier, his controversy with terrorism, his personal relationships. All of it was shocking, how can a man have so many lives in one life.

On whether he will be playing the next Munna Bhai instead of Sanjay Dutt

Munna Bhai is Sanjay Dutt, just like there can never be another Sanjay Dutt, there cannot be another Munna Bhai!I am only trying to portray a character; which is Sanjay Dutt!

We totally agree!
