Interesting Tidbits About The SMOKE-ing Star – Gulshan Devaiah

Gulshan outdoing himself again, in a web series this time

The sex addict in Hunterrr, the protective brother in Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela, the emotionally tortured college truant in Death in the Gunj, Gulshan Devaiah is that rare talent of Bollywood who has not been a stereotype. He is about to set foot in the much coveted world of web series and we are more than certain that he is going to live up to the expectations we have from him.

More and more actors are now drawn to the world of web series, and with our favourite Nawazuddin Siddique setting high standards in Sacred Games, we cannot help but be excited about the role of the gangster JJ (Jairam Jha) that Gulshan Devaiah is going to play in the web series SMOKE. The series features talented Bollywood stars like Kalki Koechlin, Neil Bhoopalam, Jim Sarbh, Mandira Bedi, and Girish Kulkarni. Set in Goa, the plot revolves around the shady underbelly of the place, and is woven with layers of greed and power politics.

Gulshan has worked with his Shaitan co-stars Kalki and Neil, so that’s a comfort zone for him. What he liked most about the series is the way they wanted to narrate the story. Guess what drew Gulshan to Smoke? Being from South India, the producer showed enough faith in him to play the role of a Bihari shooter. The flashy, ambitious, greedy, Jairam Jha here is all set to personify greed.

Gulshan has previously worked in the movie Dum Maaro Dum, which was also shot in Goa, and had more or less the same theme, although the plot of SMOKE is more raw. Though a little weird to compare the two, for one is a movie and one is a web series, Gulshan reportedly has different views. Our Jairam Jha reportedly thinks that movies and web-series are dependent on each other, though it’ll be a shame if people stopped going to the theaters as the nostalgia would fade.

Gulshan owes the success of SMOKE to the gritty story and the great cast. He surely loves working with ones who have faith in his abilities and, to add a shade of grey to the dark characters he has been playing. The series gives a bird’s eye view of the world of narcotics in Goa and director Neel Guha has indeed done a great job.

We have recently witnessed Gulshan portray his immense talent in the movie Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota, and his role has been critically acclaimed by fans and critics. We definitely wish to see more of Gulshan in years to come, everytime outdoing his previous portrayals for the better.
