The irresponsible storytelling of Punjabi music videos continues

Fukri is the name of a new song by Ruhi Didar, which has been launched in video form by the Humble Music YouTube channel. This music video is about a breakup, which results in one partner absolutely humiliating the other for having ditched him. Everything in this video is bizarre, and it’s even creepy at times. The song itself is about berating the girl for having broken up with him. In that sense, he calls her Fukri, which is the female equivalent of Fukra, the word used for referring to good for nothing people.

Fukri has been sung by Ruhi Didar alone, with its music having been composed by Jaymeet. Jassi Lokha and Kamma Sangudhaun have been credited for its questionable lyrics. The music of Fukri has a good beat going for it. Ruhi Didar’s singing style is extremely generic though; it’s something that we hear in almost every other Punjabi song these days. His voice has a good reach, however, which makes the song somewhat catchy.

The music video for Fukri starts with the girl choosing to not answer Ruhi Didar’s call while hanging out with her friends. Seeing that she has disconnected his call, Ruhi steps out of his car, a cunning smile on his face, and burns a large red teddy bear to ashes. The next scene has the girl shedding tears when she gets a video call from Ruhi who also seems to be crying. But he quickly reveals to her that those are fake tears, and goes on to laugh wildly at her plight.

The video then moves to a campsite where Ruhi and his friends party by popping some beers. But it’s the next scene that is the eeriest. The girl chats with someone on Facebook and goes to meet him. Unbeknownst to her, he takes her at a deserted location where she learns that the guy is actually Ruhi’s friend, and she has been brought there just for further humiliation. They then leave her at this deserted place all alone.

The fact that such songs are getting such popularity is alarming. Fukri is a borderline misogynistic song that feeds off of our patriarchal culture instead of responsibly portraying it as negative. Do yourself a favour, and don’t watch this music video.
