The trailer of Jhalak has been received extremely well and everyone is talking about how good the film looks. But to be adapting a hit film is a huge risk that filmmakers often take. Similarly, Karan Johar too took a huge risk by adapting Sairat, a film which struck a chord with the audience around the world and was one of the biggest Marathi films. When you adapt a film like that there is always a huge comparison, so what made Karan Johar take such a risk by not only adapting a hit film but also launching two new stars in it? Karan says that he always listens to his instinct.”That first feeling we get and my instinct dictates most of my decisions,” says Karan.
Karan is very calm about it and agrees that comparisons are bound to happen no matter what you do and try. “All you can do is pay homage to that film, which is what Shashank and the entire Dhadak team have attempted to do. Then there is also the daunting task of launching new talent. All of us know what a great responsibility that can be, to project actors in their best light on celluloid as never before,” he adds.

Speaking about casting completely fresh talent for the film Karan says, “The risk factor is there in every film. Sairat is about innocent love and to depict that, we needed that innocence and for that we need first hand talent. When I saw Ishaan for the first time in some videos on Instagram, it so happened I was judging a show on television and Shahid happened to be there for the same. Co-incidentally Ishaan happened to visit Shahid on the set and that’s when I observed him from far and saw his body language, his personality, his eyes, there was something about him and I knew instinctively that he would fit the part.”

As far as Janhvi is concerned, it was designer Manish Malhotra who was responsible in introducing Jhanvi to Karan. Karan says, “Since Manisha shares a very close bond with Jhanvi’s family, he used to talk so much about Jhanvi that I almost felt that I knew her well so I went and met the family, met Janhvi. I asked Jhanvi to read some poems and lines that I had with me and I saw that excitement in her eyes. I saw the how keen she was to face the big screen . I knew just then that she would be as brilliant on the big screen as the lineage she comes from.”
Making a conscious attempt to avoid the use of the term nepotism that has been haunting Karan as he says since almost two years now, Karan feels that star kids or kids from filmy backgrounds need to make their own name and their own identity. “That is what our responsibility is and so is theirs. People forget that behind the famous families and names they come from, these people have to work equally hard, dedicatedly and with a lot of enthusiasm. It is not easy to face the camera, audience or the media just like that. So it is wrong if people tag them and say that these kids from the famous film backgrounds are here to act only because of the family they belong to but they are here because of their hard work.”

Just like Karan had some kind of an instinct about Ishaan, he shares that he had a similar instinct when it came to signing director of Dhadak Shashank. He said,“ When Shashank walked into my cabin for the first time, I had the same instinct.I knew he had it in him.He is the speediest filmmaker at Dharma productions besides being the most profitable one too in many ways. Makes the film in budget and within the time given and he always have a smile on his face and positivity in his heart for all at Dharma productions. You could say he is our Rajshri production boy in Dharma production!”
As they say; “Trust your instinct …intuition doesn’t lie!” Karan Johar’s instincts seemed to have been on the spot as the trailer of Dhadak looks like it’s going to be a blockbuster and his two lead actors look like they’ve absolutely nailed it!
