Nawazuddin Siddiqui And His Convincing Negative Roles

None can play the grey shades like Nawazuddin does

Nawazuddin Siddiqui is known for playing exceptional roles. Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s natural and brilliant presentation in all the movies has gained him a special niche in Bollywood, the Negative Role. Though he has been mocked for his unconventional looks and lack of background, his popularity and acting skills itself speaks for his star quality. Let’s revisit a few of his previous negative roles in Bollywood that have truly marked him as an actor par excellence.

“Faizal Khan” In The Gangs Of Wasseypur Franchise (2012)

Still new to Bollywood, Nawaz handled the guns like a natural for his gangster role in this movie. He perfected his demeanor, accent and dialogue delivery to win over the audience and win the Special Mention for Acting Award at the 60th National Film Awards (2012).

This was the first time that Nawaz was offered to play the major character of a rogue, and he enjoyed it thoroughly. His character appeared only in the second half of the movie but left a huge impact on the audience. His signature evil laughter for the movie was inspired by Manoj Banerjee’s character Raghavan Ghatge, which earned him a few more brownie points for his small role.

“Liak” In Badlapur (2015)

Though Varun Dhawan was the official ‘leading star’ of the movie, it was Nawaz’s Liak that brought away all the cheers and whistle in spite of acting as a bank robber in the movie. Liak is heart-warming, cheeky and funny and before you know it, he has charmed you with his dialogues and expressions. He perfects every scene and dialogue delivery as though he has been practising the same for years. This is really one of those movies where the villain is remembered more than the hero!

“Ramanna” in Raman Raghav 2.0 (2016)

Nawaz revealed at the trailer launch that the the role had made him fear himself for sometime

This psychological-thriller has gained some Oscar-worthy attention and all the acknowledgment goes to Nawaz’s realistic portrayal of Ramanna the serial killer. Ramanna’s character is based on a real-life person called Raman Raghav, also known as Psycho Raman in the 1960s. Playing the role of someone who had killed nine people is an abusive partner and a drug-addict was a challenging task for the actor. Nawaz had left home for two days without informing, was later hospitalised for a week and started speaking his dialogues in his sleep. Well, here’s what the term ‘getting into the skin of the character’ really means!

IPS Jaideep Ambalal Majmudar In Raees (2017)

Although literally the bad man in the movie was Shah Rukh Khan (Raees), Nawazuddin was the one who played the major antagonist to the protagonist here. Though his role here is not exactly negative, as he plays an honest police officer, he was as determined in his purpose as was SRK the don here.

He has proved his talent again in the teaser of the trending Netflix flick “Sacred Games”. To be released on 6th July, 2018, Nawaz plays the character of Ganesh Gaitonde, a feared criminal who often believes himself to be God, as in his opening line – “kabhi kabhi lagta hai ki apun hi bhagwaan hai.”

While we wait for his latest haunting performance in the upcoming web series, here’s hoping we will see more such iconic roles played by Nawaz!
