It is Black Cat Day, and we decipher why it crosses our path?

On the Black Cat Day, we question whether belief in superstitions is harmful or just irrational.

We all tend to believe in superstitions #jic something goes wrong. Some of you must still believe in handing out cash only with the right hand, or considered it bad luck if someone sneezes while you are leaving from home. How many of us still feel more secure with lemons and chillies hanging over our front doors?

As today is Black Cat Day, we examine why the cat crosses our path, and what does it mean to us?

So while we continue with our daily lives, thinking that a little irrational belief harms no one, let us question whether superstitions are really harmless?

Remember Sharman Joshi’s character in the film “3 Idiots”? He was ruled by fear and had taken recourse in superstition. It was only after a tragic incident, that he realized the faults of his ways. So, it is fine to be superstitious unless they come to rule your life and all your decisions.

They can cause great inconvenience to people around the believer. In the recently launched film, “Toilet: Ek Prem Katha”, Akshay Kumar was compelled to lie to his father because the latter insisted on getting a bride only if she had the congenital condition of thumb duplication. Even besides the film, so many of us have had to obey decisions by parents or relatives because they believed in something blindly.

Superstition cause anxiety to the believer themselves. For instance, people are paralyzed by the fear of Friday, the 13th. This fear comes to dominate their emotions, and they may mess up their work even if they are good at it.

The biggest bane of believing in superstition is that the person becomes a fodder for the fake godmen and touts, who are out to make an easy buck based on someone’s fear. They extricate money by promising to help clear exams, find a partner or succeed in work.

Superstition, by definition, is irrational. So it is fine to believe, unless it is harmful to you or others.

So, in answer to why the cat crosses our path, it only means that it is going somewhere.
