What To Do When You Get An Unfair Appraisal

What to do if you feel that your performance review was unfair?

Has it happened that someone has taken credit for your work and you feel that the performance review was wrong? Has it happened that you thought you put in your best in the last quarter, and yet it did not reflect when your boss filled in the appraisal report?

So, how do you handle such a situation when you feel that the work appraisal was unfair?

Remain calm

After receiving a bad performance review, you may feel sad or even angry. Beware of responding to your boss while you are in this state of mind. Your emotions may make you say something to your boss you will regret later on. Mike Harwood, human resources director at Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada had a very nasty experience when an employee reacted badly and thought she was part of the solution, rather than the problem. It would have been better if she had thought through calmly before reacting.

Don’t compare with others

Often we feel that we are treated unfairly when we compare our performance with others. This jealousy can affect judgements, and really spoil your concentration. Many characters in Shakespeare plays were killed because of the seed of envy. See the red light before you go green.

Call it out

If you still feel that you have been dealt with unfairly, speak directly to your boss or HR. Most companies now honour honestly and forth-rightness, rather than manipulative games. When you speak, use logical points to convince them of your view. Vague claims cannot take you anywhere in such cases. Even Warren Buffet said that honesty is an expensive gift, and one must not expect it from cheap people. Have an objective discussion such as how you have met your target or stated goals, and explain why you deserve a better review.

Negotiate differently

Appraisal is not just about increment in pay or a change in title. It is about how well or bad have you done and most importantly, how you are expected to perform henceforth. Therefore, it gives a perfect ground to get clarity on what you must achieve to grow in responsibility and authority.

Be honest to yourself and your boss, if you feel that your appraisal has been unfair.
