How Much Water Should You Drink According To Your BMI?

BMI refers to your Body Mass Index, which is a measurement of your body fat in relation to your weight and height. It is usually applied to men and women above the age of 20.

Water is important to keep you healthy overall and helps your body to function the way it should. If you’re not drinking enough water as per what your body requires, it could lead to dehydration and in some cases, kidney stones as well.

How do you know how much water you need?

Some say drink eight glasses of water a day, some say drink at least two litres of water a day. But how do you really know how much water you need?

The amount of water that may be enough for someone else could be less or more for what you need to be drinking. Factors such as height, weight, amount of physical activity being done will also play a big role in determining how much water you need to drink.

Drinking water according to your body weight

Water forms a percentage of your total body weight. It means that a person with a larger body type will need more water than a person with a smaller body type. According to some health reports, the golden rule to follow is to calculate your body weight and multiply it by 0.033. The number you get will be the amount of water in litres you should consume in a day.

So, for instance, if you weigh 72 kg, you will need to drink about two and a half litres of water. You can reach this number by converting the body weight to kg from lbs and converting the oz. to litres.

When to increase water intake

This calculation is applicable when you are doing simple activities such as doing chores around the house, sitting and reading, working at your desk and so on. Once your activities increase, such as going outdoors, walking, exercising and so on, make sure to keep adding to your water intake to avoid dehydration.

Easy ways to add more water to your day

• Have 2 cups water before each meal (also prevents you from overeating and helps keep weight in control).

• Have a glass of water the moment you wake up and the last thing before you go to sleep.

• Add natural flavours to your water, such as mint leaves, lemon rind and so on to add that zing and make it more delicious.
