26th August is Rakshabandhan here in India. For most of us, the memories of our siblings are filled with having grown up fighting with a brother or sister, or absolutely wishing we were an only child and that our parents hadn’t made the mistake of having them.

However, there’s no denying the fact that at least for this one day, we do kind of get together with these very siblings of ours, especially if they live in a different city, or if life and busy schedules get in the way.

So as you get set to celebrate this special day with your sibling, here’s how people around the world celebrate their siblings.

The UK Celebrates Brother And Sister Day On 2 May

In the UK, 2 May is celebrated as Brother and Sister Day. Much as the name suggests, it is a day that is dedicated to your sibling and everyone tries to spend some quality time with their brother or sister, by either doing something together, visiting them in person or getting in touch with them if they don’t live nearby. Sadly, the day was started off by a woman after the death of her brother, when she realized that while he was alive, she never really spent much time with him.

In the US, 10 April is celebrated as Sibling Day. While it gets its inspiration from Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, it is a day that is meant to honor the bond that siblings share and encourage people to spend more time with their siblings. The event was started by Claudia Evart who lost both her siblings in childhood. 10 April marks the birthday of one of her sisters’ Lisette who she lost.

How We Celebrate In India

Did you know that even in India, the way we celebrate Rakshabandhan is different from state to state?

In Jammu, people fly kits for the entire month of Rakshabandhan, while in Uttarakhand, the day is a celebration of brothers as well as sisters and a big fair takes place too. In Maharashtra and other coastal areas in West India, the sea is worshipped and people cook sweets made of coconut before celebrating the day with their siblings.
