Girls just wanna have fun, they say. But women are so much more than that. Give a woman silver hair and three dragons and she can conquer the iron throne. But we are not Daenerys Targaryan. Closer home, women are conquering the world nonetheless without any dragons or without wearing a cape.

From sports to movies, to professions that were by default a man’s prerogative women are doing it all and doing it with a smile and a lot of blood- we bleed once every month and yet it is the most non-violent blood spill ever. From killing girl child to taking commands from a woman officer, India has come a long way and we couldn’t be more proud of it today on the #NationalGirlChildDay.

Sports and athletics was largely dominated by men and to some extent still is. We may not watch women’s cricket but at least it exists. P.V Sindhu, Jhulan Goswami, Mithali Raj, Saina Nehwal and Mary Kom and so many others are taking a wild dig at those who said women cannot do it. The Chak de dream is finally coming true and whether we have a Kabir Khan to see us through it or not doesn’t really matter. Just like people find it difficult to accept a male nurse or a male nanny, they find it increasingly difficult to take orders from a woman police officer.

While we still have a lot to change, people are however stepping forward to take initiative to educate the girl child. A woman is no longer seen as a home maker. More and more women are taking up careers that were considered a man’s job. So if a woman delivers your food or drives you to a place, don’t be surprised. As Twinkle Khanna has remarked, “Our little satellite reached Mars because it was called MOM. If it was called DAD, it would still be circling the Earth, lost but not willing to ask for directions.”

Women have been doing it all, you name it and a woman has done it except being stupid maybe. Actors like Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut and many more are also stepping up to educate people on how gender equality is the new cool. The government has taken countless measures to ensure the protection of the girl child and while we have developed considerably in this regard there is also a lot to be done.

Taxes on sanitary pads, the taboo surrounding menstruation, consent and marital rape, domestic violence, subjugation of the voices of women in politics are a few things that will demand your immediate attention.

While we have accepted women as the bosses in so many arenas of the world, let us also ensure that this world is a better and safer place for them.
