In Indonesia, you will be surprised to find millions of the Tenneger tribe locals gathered around the Mount Bromo volcano this time of the year for their annual offering festival. They offer several things starting from fruits, vegetables, flowers to chickens and goats into the volcano’s active crater. The resulting fire and smoke is believed to recreate the legendary sacrifice that was made many centuries ago.

Listed as one of the most ‘bizarre feats of strength’ events, this competition in Sonkajärvi, Finland is not for the weak. The competition has its origins back in the 1800s, where a gang leader by the name of Rosvo-Rokainen chose his members only if they passed the challenge, which also included stealing women from nearby villages. Starting on 6 July this year, the winners shall be awarded beer, a bag of wife carrying products and a statue with the motif of a man carrying his wife.

On 29th July each year, the Spanish village of Las Nieves celebrates those who have survived near-death experiences. Relatives carry the survivors in coffins to the shrine of Virgin Santa Maria, who is the patron Saint of Resurrection. Millions of people line up on the street, and there are firework displays and other festivities to enjoy throughout the day. After attending the Mass, the coffins are then carried to the local cemetery and then back to a church with a statue of Santa Maria. Though it does sound festive and happy, we can’t really ignore the creepiness of the situation.
