The food served in the langar at any gurdwara anywhere in the world will leave you licking your fingers. It’s not a lavish spread but a simple meal of daal, rice, roti and vegetables and salad but it gives you the satisfaction no five-star restaurant food will ever give you. The food at the langar always tastes great. It is one of the humblest but most satisfying meals you’ll ever have!

When we were doing my higher studies in Delhi and were short on cash, my friends and I would land up at the gurudwara every time we craved for some simple yet wholesome food. We’d quickly bow our heads before the Granth Sahib and shamelessly race straight for the langar!

So what is it that makes the langar food so special and tasty? Here are some reasons according to me that makes this humble meal so special.

The meal is prepared by devoted volunteers or sevadars as they are called, who work together to get the meal ready. All this is done while they keep chanting “Wahe Guru.”

The whole idea of how people from different walks of life, irrespective of caste, creed, and status forget the differences and sit together on the floor and eat the meal together.

The meal is served with a lot of respect and love by the volunteers, who range from different age groups.

All the dishes are handmade hygienically by the sevadars and most of the ingredients used are pure and fresh as most everything that is cooked or donated are consumed by a large number of people who come to the gurudwara to eat.

Eating your meal with the sound of the kirtan in the background is the most peaceful surreal feeling and makes the food more satiating.

Last but not the least it’s the generosity and selflessness with which the volunteers cook and serve the meal that makes this meal so special.

If you’ve never tried the langar food ever, I would say you must!
