What Is The Difference Between Irish Whiskey and Scottish Whisky?

Did you think the only difference was that Irish Whiskey is from Ireland while Scottish Whisky is from Scotland? Read on to find out more

So it’s that time of the year again; Diwali, time for family, friends, fun, food, gambling and some drinking! Talking about drinking, I personally love drinking Irish whiskey but there are many who prefer Scottish whisky over the Irish. What is the difference anyways you may wonder, or you may say maybe because Irish Whiskey is from Ireland while Scottish Whisky(also known as Scotch) is from Scotland. But the two are quite different, read on to find out more.

The first interesting difference between the two is the way it is spelt! Irish Whiskey is always spelt with an E., while Scotch Whisky is always spelt without the E!

Secondly, Irish Whiskey is made from unmalted barley as well as other grains, while Scottish Whisky is made from malted barley and other grains.

Thirdly, Irish Whiskey has a lighter flavour and is smoother, that’s because it is triple distilled while Scottish Whisky is usually distilled only twice. It’s the distillation that makes all the difference.

Though Irish Whiskey and Scottish Whisky are both made with water and barley, the barley goes through a drying process that tends to keep the natural flavor of the grain while the Scottish whisky allows the barley to sprout after which the barley is dried with peat moss smoke. That’s what also gives the Scottish whisky a stronger aroma and gives a smoky, peaty taste.

There is only one common fact between the two; Both are matured for a minimum of 3 years in a copper pot!
