3 Asanas to Digest a Heavy Meal

Yoga to help you after you go out on a binge

In an effort to finish daily tasks, we often miss out on paying attention to simple yet important aspects of life. One of the things that we tend to ignore is “having our meal”. Our belief is, as far as we’re wisely choosing what we eat, everything else falls in place. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Ayurveda has mentioned and elaborated the rules with regards to eating your food. One of the most important rules is to chew your food till it gets liquefied and swallow it only after it thoroughly mixes with your saliva. Not doing this leads to indigestion, makes you feel bloated and heavy.

Yoga comes to your rescue in so many such situations. The general rule is to practice yogasanas 3 hours after a full meal. Yet, there are certain yoga poses that can be practiced after a heavy meal as they aid in digestion of the food.

1. Dandasana (Staff Pose)

This asana gives relief to people who feel a bloating sensation in the abdomen after eating a heavy meal. It should be practiced for about 1 minute as the effects are felt only after 30 seconds or so. It also helps people suffering from other gastric problems like indigestion and heaviness by improving the functionality of the digestive organs.

2. Gomukhasana (Cow Face Pose)

This pose has multiple benefits apart from curing indigestion. It stretches the spine and the abdominal muscles and boosts the process of digestion. You can hold this pose for as long as you feel comfortable. This can be practiced immediately after a heavy meal though you must make sure, you don’t exert too much pressure on the abdomen.

3. Vajrasana (Thunderbolt Pose)

This is one the most recommended yogic postures for digesting a heavy meal. The specific position of stretching the upper body and abdomen relaxes your breathing and helps in boosting digestion. The blood flow to the pelvic area and stomach increases as the blood flow to the thighs gets obstructed for a while. This makes digestion better.

Now that all the festivals like Rakhi, Ganesh Chaturthi are around the corner, there’s going to be an overdose of mithas and good food. It’s a good time to try out these asanas
