Flavors from Home, Food for Soul

If you stay away from family, you miss home cooked meals more than any other thing. Here is how you make the most of the experience of eating when you are back in mum’s kitchen.

When you are away from home for education or work, it is easy to stay in touch with family and friends with modern technology. But technology has not made enough advances to teleport food from one place to another.

So while there are many eateries, restaurants and tiffin facilities, nothing can replace home food. However good the Paratha Palace may be, it will never be like the aloo paratha made by your mother. All Udupi hotels combined cannot make a dosa like the one at home.

So when we plan a trip home, the first thing that comes to our mind is the food. After waiting for some months, there are certain things to keep in mind to savor the food to the fullest.

Be prepared
Send your mother a list of what you missed the most. She will be able to prepare the ingredients and schedule your favorite dishes for every meal. This is especially important if you are going home only for a short time.

Enjoy the moment
This is the moment you have been thinking of for those hungry nights away from home. Taking pictures of mum’s food for instagram is a waste of her energy and your time.

Savor the food
Enjoy every bite and every moment with the family. These times are irreplaceable, and nostalgia will haunt you with the aroma forever. Remember, the food then feeds the soul, as much as the body.

Come back with more

Pack some of the special spices and masala powder made at home. This way, you can try recreating those dishes when away. It is always thrilling to try and weave the home magic on your own.

Food made with love is more than just sustenance. It makes us relive childhood and infuses us with love. It leaves a mark on our memories that help us endure few more months of the dabbawala aunty.
