In ancient times, Indians had a tradition of offering “Arghya” to the sun by pouring a steady stream of water from a vessel around sunrise.

Additionally, they used to recite the “Surya Mantra” while doing so. This not only has physical benefits, but has been known to bring about harmony and peace to the mind. This was a very scientific practice if we think about it from the modern perspective of sunbathing. This ancient practice kind of makes it clear that the best time to do sunbathing is when the sun rises. Sun exposure of about 10-20 minutes after sun rise or between 7 am-9am (depending on the time of sunrise) is enough to get most benefits out of it.

This practice is considered very healthy and can help prevent a lot of ailments caused by lack of Vitamin D because the Sun is a natural source of Vitamin D. Also, the level of UV rays is the lowest at this time.

The ones that find it difficult to do sunbathing early in the morning can also sunbathe late in the afternoon or at sunrise. The time could vary from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM depending on the location. Any time between these time slots is not the best to take a sunbath owing to the severity of the sun rays and its effect on the skin.

Balconies, open verandas, sunny backyards are considered ideal for sunbathing. Wear minimal clothes, spread a bed sheet (if not for recliner chairs) on the floor and lie down on it. Cover yourself up till your body is warmed up to avoid feeling cold. Once it feels warm, uncover and lie down with eyes closed and soak in the sun rays for anything between 15 – 40 minutes. Avoid the use of anti-tan or sunscreen lotions. The idea is to let the skin soak in sun’s energy. Post sunbathing, wipe the skin surface with a dry cloth or simply take a warm water bath.

The sun eradicates physical, mental and spiritual weakness and helps you achieve a state of positive health. Go get your share of the divine energy rather than spending on expensive, chemical skin creams.
