In case you notice any types of suicidal tendencies in someone, it is very important to give it attention and not to ignore it as something that will get better on its own.

If you want to help someone and avoid a tragic situation, one of the first steps to help the person could be to talk to them.

While this can sound a little scary or quite difficult, especially if you have never spoken like this to anyone before, you will have to really tread carefully.

To make sure that you don’t come across as someone who is trying to be critical or judgmental and will not cause any distress to someone who is already under a lot of mental stress, make sure you try the following.

Find Out If They Are In Immediate Danger

Ask them: Are you thinking of hurting yourself? Are you planning to do something? Do you want to take your life now?

If the person says yes, or if their behavior suggests they are about to harm themselves now, you have to inform the nearest authority. If you are in the office, you should immediately alert your boss and the HR. If you are outside in a public space, inform the authorities there. If you are talking to this person over the phone, you can immediately alert someone else who may be at home with the person you are talking to, or is related to that person and can reach them immediately.

In the meanwhile, keep talking to that person.

If you have called for help or are trying to get help even as you are talking to the person who is suicidal, it is important to stall them so that they can’t do anything dangerous immediately.

  • Keep asking them what happened and what they are thinking right now.
  • Ask about their plans.
  • Don’t sound judgmental or rude. Don’t sound as if you don’t care, or as if they are doing this for attention.
  • Offer an alternative to taking one’s life but don’t preach about it.

Some Things You Can Ask

  • Who made you feel this way?
  • When did you first think about this?
  • Does anyone know?
  • Does that person know you are feeling like this?
  • Is there anything I can do to help?
