91st Oscar Awards Winners

Movie lovers around the world have been waiting for this day and the anticipation has been building up to a fevered pitch! Yes that’s what happens every year during the Oscar Award telecast. Millions of movie fans are glued to their television sets to watch the biggest and the most glamorous award ceremony.While everyone would love to follow the ceremony, right from the fashion parade on the red carpet, to the musical performances, star presenters, awards and acceptance speeches live, it might not have been possible for all to do so.The awards this year was held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles.

The 91st Oscars aired live on ABC on Sunday in the US, at around 6.30pm ET/3:30pm PT with the red carpet coverage followed by the award ceremony at 8pm ET/5pm PT.While for the rest of us living in India, it was in the wee hours of the morning.For all those who missed the action live, here’s the latest update about the ceremony for you.

The show opened with a performance by Adam Lambert and Queen. So far the awards that have been announced are:

 Actress In A Supporting Role

Regina said that she’s an example of what it looks like when support and love is poured in.

The award for the Best Actress In A Supporting Role went to Regina King. The others who were nominated for the same were Amy Adams (Vice), Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk), Marina De Tervira (Roma), Emma Stone (The Favourite), and Rachel Weisz (The Favourite).

Documentary Feature

Free Solo, Hale Country, This Morning, This Evening, Minding the Gap, Of Fathers and Sons, and RBG were the nominees for the Best Documentary Feature and the award went to Free Solo.

 MakeUp And Hairstyling

Christian Bale’s bald look was brilliantly done in Vice

There were three nominees for Best MakeUp And Hairstyling ; Border, Mary Queen of Scots and Vice. The bets were high on Vice especially for Christian Bale’s bald look and the award did go to Vice!

 Cinematography

Roma was beautifully shot

The cinematography of Cold War, The Favourite, Never Look Away, Roma , and A Star is Born were among the best, but it was the beautiful cinematography of Roma that won the award. The monochromatic innovation in 65mm is a visual delight!

Costume Design

Black Panther wins the award for Costume Design

The Ballad of Buster, Scruggs, Black Panther, The Favourite, Mary Poppins Returns , and Mary Queen of Scots were all nominated for the Best Costumes. People were thinking it would be the classic costumes of The Favourite that would walk away with the award  but the award went to Black Panther.

Production Design

Black Panther took the award again for Production Design. The others nominated for the same were; The Favourite, First Man, Mary Poppins Returns, and Roma. The Favourite again was a strong contender with the beautiful period look and feel to the film.

Sound Editing

Black Panther, Bohemian Rhapsody, First Man, A Quiet Place, and Roma were all strong contenders for Sound Editing.With the brilliant sound mixing of A Quiet Place being the strongest contender, however, the award went to Bohemian Rhapsody.

Sound Mixing

While Sound Editing is all about capturing sound, Sound Mixing is about assembling all the sound together. The award for Sound Mixing too went to Bohemian Rhapsody. The others nominated were;Black Panther, Bohemian Rhapsody, First Man, Roma, and A Star is Born.

Foreign Language Film

Capernaum, Cold War, Never Look Away, Roma, and Shoplifters were all nominated for the best Foreign Language The award went to Roma, while Shoplifters too was a strong contender.

Film Editing

It’s Bohemian Rhapsody again which walks away with another award! There was a cut-together scene from Bohemian Rhapsody that went viral. A scene in which the group meet the manager Allen Leech was slammed online for its editing! Vice and BlacKkKlansman were two movies that people thought would win the award for editing.

Best Actor In A Supporting Role

All votes went to Mahershala Ali.

Mahershala Ali (Green Book), Adam Driver (BlacKkKlansman), Sam Elliott (A Star is Born), Richard E. Grant ( Can You Ever Forgive Me),and Sam Rockwell (Vice) were the nominees for the Best Actor In A Supporting Role.The award however went to Mahershala Ali.

Animated Feature Film

There were films like Incredibles 2, Isle of Dogs, Mirai, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and  Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse that were nominated under this category but it was Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse that received the maximum votes.The film created quite a buzz!

Animated Short Film

Animal Behaviour, Bao, Late Afternoon, One Small Step, and Weekends were all nominated for this category and the award went to Bao the computer-animated short film written and directed by Domee Shi and produced by Pixar Animation Studios.

Documentary Short Subject

It was Period. End of Sentence, about the stigma of menstruation in rural India that won the award in this cateogory. The film is streaming on Netflix. The film is about women in India fighting against the stigma of menstruation. It also talks about the real life ‘Pad Man’ Arunachalam Muruganathan. It is executive produced by Guneet Monga and co-produced by Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment, which has backed films like The Lunchbox and Masaan.

Visual Effects

Avengers: Infinity War, Christopher Robin, First Man, Ready Player, and One Solo: A Star Wars Story were some of the films that had the best visula effects but sadly there’s only one winner! The award went to First Man, though the chances of Avengers: Infinity War winning were high too.

Live Action Short

The award for Live Action Short Film went to Skin. The film is a story of a young boy who encounters a black man at a supermarket and his parents react to the exchange with racial violence.Fox Searchlight has acquired the film. The others nominated in this category were;Detainment,Fauve, Margueritte, and Mother.

Adapted Screenplay

BlacKkKlansman is American biographical crime comedy drama film

The Ballad of Buster, Scruggs, BlacKkKlansman, Can You Ever Forgive Me, If Beale Street Could Talk, and A Star is Born were all nominated under this category but the award went to BlacKkKlansman.

Original Score

Black Panther wins the best Original Score. BlacKkKlansman, If Beale Street Could Talk, Isle of Dogs, and Mary Poppins Returns were the other contenders. The use of the orchestra in Black Panther was intriguing indeed!

Original Song

The nominees for the Best Original Song were All the Stars (Black Panther) I’ll Fight (RBG), The Place Where Lost Things Go (Mary Poppins Returns), Shallow (A Star is Born), and When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs).While many were rooting for When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings and Shallow, it was Shallow    by Lady Gaga that won the award. Lady Gaga said,”It’s not about winning, but what it’s about is not giving up. If you have a dream, fight for it.”

Animated Feature Film

Incredibles 2, Isle of Dogs, Mirai, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse were all nominated as the best Animated Feature Film.Looks like mostly everyone voted for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which won the award.

Best Actor In A Leading Role

Rami Malek wins best actor

Actors Christian Bale(Vice), Bradley Cooper (A Star is Born), Willem Dafoe (At Eternity’s Gate), Rami Malek(Bohemian Rhapsody) and Viggo Mortensen (Green Book) were all nominated for the Best Actor Category and Rami Malek was who mostly everyone thought would win, but the award went to Rami Malek.”I may not have been the obvious choice but I guess it worked out,” said Malek.

Best Actress In A Leading Role

The nominees for the Best Actress In A Leading Role were Yalitza Aparicio (Roma), Glenn Close (The Wife), Olivia Colman (The Favourite), Lady Gaga (A Star is Born), and Melissa McCarthy ( Can You Ever Forgive Me). While all stakes were on Lady Gaga and Yalitza Aparicio, it was Olivia Colman who took home the award.While Olivia stopped her tears of happiness from flowing, it was her husband who couldn’t control his tears! Olivia said, “Any  little girl who is practicing their speech on the telly, you never know.”

Best Director 

The competition was tough for the Best Director

For the Best Director Award it was a tough fight with directors like Alfonso Cuarón(Roma), Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite), Spike Lee (BlacKkKlansman), Adam McKay (Vice), and Pawel Pawlikowski (Cold War) all being nominated.The competition was tough especially between Alfonso Cuarón and Spike Lee. Alfonso Cuarón eventually walked home with the award!

Best Picture

Green Book wins the Best Picture Award

While films like  Black Panther, BlakkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Green Book, Roma, A Star is Born and Vice were nominated for this award, people were debating that either Roma, Black Panther or Green Book would win. The award went to Green Book!

There were some great surprises this year at the Academy Awards! Winning an Academy Award is something every actor, film celebrity or film maker dreams of and for some the dream has come true today!
