Aamir Khan Is Not A ‘Secret’ Superstar In China Anymore

It’s no secret anymore – Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar is one of the biggest movies in China right now

Even as talks between India and China go from good to bad at different times, there’s one thing that seems to be connecting the two nations of late, and how!

The 2017 Indian blockbuster ‘Secret Superstar’ has broken all box office records in China. At the moment, this is the biggest movie in China, and has already grossed more than US $ 98 million (in China), while it was produced at a budget of US $ 2.4 million). The movie grossed more than US $46 million in its first week of opening to the Chinese viewers.

This is the highest business any Indian movie has ever done in China, which even surpassed James Cameron’s highly commercial movie Avatar that was released in the year 2010.

It has managed to bring in viewers in hordes, as more and more Chinese are able to relate to the similar issues that are faced in the societies of both these countries.

Whether it is about patriarchy, domestic abuse and violence and even objectification to an extent the social issues shown in the movie managed a neat 8 out of 10 on the ranking website called Douban, where viewers can rate a movie according to their likes.

Another Aamir Khan led movie that had similarly managed to strike a chord with the Chinese audience was 3 Idiots, which also had very similar social issues faced by the Chinese youth, as the Indian youths are shown to suffer. The movie that dealt with academic pressure and the burden and guilt of failure as faced by young students at the hands of their parents, society and academic peer and staff, was thought to showcase the situation in the Chinese educational system as well.

While the box office numbers are no doubt great, it is nice to see the bond of friendship and connect between the two big super powers in Asia that are always competing with each other.
