4 Things That Today's Couples can Relate to

If you’re a new-age couple, chances are, that your relationship is really different from what your parents describe. Fast paced, isolated lives in the digital age entail that you’re connected to your significant other 24×7 but it doesn’t do away with all troubles. Couples of this generation have their own perks, norms and habits, which fall under varying categories of the good, the bad and the ugly.

Social media presence is a must to have a functional relationship because if you aren’t hash-tagging your Insta posts as #datewithbae, are you really even dating? Pictures announcing trips, lazy days watching movies, or fancy dinners are customary in your social media pages! Take a cue from Bipasha Basu who adds a custom #monkeylove to all her posts with hubby Karan Singh Grover on Instagram! Add to this a healthy dose of tagging in memes and posting some mush on each other’s walls. Puppies, kittens, babies and cute stuff in videos to make the other’s day better is the new relationship fad. Isn’t it?

Relationships are no longer all long drawn affairs and when you find someone, there are extremely high chances of them having dated other people before (you might have too). Past relationship baggage is a real thing because the “ex-trouble” never really ends. Remember a really creepy ex of Christian’s in Fifty Shades Darker, or Janice and Richard in FRIENDS? They always somehow have a way of reappearing in present relationships, either virtually or in reality. Some encounters are healthy while some can be nasty. Subsequent trust issues are a given. In a world where everything is just another click away, digging up old stories or hitting up an ex is a little too easy.

Should I take up that overseas job?

One may have seen couples sacrifice a lot to be together, but that doesn’t seem to hold very true anymore. Yeh Jawaani Hain Deewani may have seen Bunny, sacrificing his dream job to be with Naina, but would you really see that today in your relationship? Pushing each other to achieve the best is a lot more common. You don’t only dream big for yourselves, but your significant other too. Career and ambition finds importance before settling down and having kids. Finding one’s passion and pursuing dreams are more coveted for couples of this generation.

Today’s couples have no time or energy for what people think or what societal norms dictate. What prying neighbors have to comment about you adopting a girl before marriage, or what your distant relatives have to say about you live-in relationships can definitely take a back seat. This generation with their fast-paced lives and work overload, could not care less about negativities that weigh them down. So, stereotypes don’t bother them anymore. Travelling, exploring and living each day to the fullest with their bae is the custom today.

These are changing, dynamic times where people love to follow their hearts and experiment beyond the usual. Relationships too, find new dimensions, where not everything needs a tag and it’s a good time, because you can really choose to be nobody else, but un-apologetically “you”.
