Akshay Kumar Was Not The First Choice For Pad Man Says Twinkle Khanna!

Radhika Apte’s parents threw a party for her when she had her first periods. The cast and crew share their pad stories!

The makers of Pad Man starring Akshay Kumar and Radhika Apte, released the film’s first song, Aaj Se Teri. The song has been picturized on Akshay Kumar and Radhika Apte and it gives us a glimpse of Lakshmikant (Akshay) and Gayatri’s (Radhika) love story. From the song, it is quite evident that Lakshmikant adores his wife and is ready to go to any length to keep her happy and comfortable.

Akshay and Radhika share a romantic moment in the film

It’s sweet to see a man take pains to ensure his wife is comfortable. He invents an onion slicing toy when he sees she’s uncomfortable chopping onions and he attaches a chair to his cycle so that his wife can sit comfortably. If only all men were like that in real (sigh!)

But we are told by the makers that most of it is real, Arunachalam Muruganantham the man on whose life the film is based on is a man of every woman’s dream! He invented a low-cost sanitary pad making the machine just to ensure menstrual hygiene for his wife.

Akshay pulls wife Twinkle’s leg

Speaking about the film, author Twinkle Khanna who wrote the story about the Sanitary Man says that when she came across the story, she knew she had to make the film as in India there were only two things the people are crazy about and that’s cricket and cinema. She joked, “Since the cricketers had their own pads to take care of, I thought I’d just stick to cinema and bring out this subject in the open so that more people are aware of it and in turn will be more open to speaking about it.”

Akshay Kumar who joked that Twinkle always had the last say in things, “ Even the doctors are scared of speaking with her as she is so well informed and well read, that she actually teaches a thing or two to the doctors too!” Twinkle also admitted that Akshay was not her first choice for the film, she had other people in mind. However, after watching the film now, she feels that there is no one who could have done the role better than Akshay. “This kind of cinema gives me satisfaction,” added Akshay.

Radhika Apte too shared her experience of going out to buy sanitary napkins, “ I come from a family of doctors and I was made well aware of periods and hygiene during periods etc. I was quite comfortable about it but even then it was odd to go to a store and ask for sanitary napkins, in spite of being a modern girl. But one day I made up my mind that I had to get over the inhibitions and I am glad I did,” she says.

Similarly, director R Balki shared his experience when he was abroad and his director wife Gouri Shinde sent him a message with an image of a particular brand of sanitary napkin asking him to pick up the same for her. He said, “ I went looking for it at the store and when I couldn’t find it, I showed the picture to a lady and asked her if she knew where I could find it. I was quite surprised to see her giggle! She couldn’t digest the fact that me being a man was looking for sanitary napkins!”

The cast and crew are positive that after watching Pad Man people’s mindset will change and there will be a positive change and people will be more open to discuss about menstruation and the use of sanitary napkins. Well, we sure hope so too!
