The Indian music industry is blessed with the diverse regional music industries that cater to the varied taste of different communities in India that speak different languages and live different cultures. Bollywood is not the exclusive source of contemporary music in India. In fact, arguably the most prolific of the regional industries that have been producing BOPs and dominating the playlist of the Indian audiences, regardless of the language barriers, are the Punjabi and the Tamil music industries. The latter is known for producing songs from time to time that tends to break the internet, from Kolaveri Di to Jimiki Kamal. Neethanae by Shreya Ghoshal

Shreya Ghoshal is the undisputable queen of Indian music today as she not only dominates the charts in Bollywood but has lent her voice to hundreds of songs in numerous regional languages. Some of her Tamil renditions that have transcended their regional boundaries include Pookkalae Sattru Oyivedungal from the 2015 movie I and Neethanae from the movie Mersal (2017), both songs composed by A R Rahman.

Konjam by Armaan Malik

The chocolate boy of the Bollywood music industry, Armaan Malik lent his voice to the Tamil song Yaar Indha Muyalkutt, composed by D Imman for the movie Paayum Puli (2015). He also rendered the soulful number Konjam, the Tamil version of the song “Jab tak” composed by his brother Amaal Malik for the 2016 movie MS Dhoni (dubbed in Tamil).

Naan Un by Arijit Singh

Arijit, the ruling king of the Indian music industry, recorded his first Tamil song, Naan Un, for A R Rahman in 2016 for the movie 24. The song was a pleasant surprise for Arijit Singh fans who showered the song with a lot of love and support.

Idhayane by Neeti Mohan

Neeti Mohan has been in the music industry since she won Channel V’s reality show Popstars. She shot into prominence in 2012 with her rendition of Ishq Wala Love for the Bollywood movie Student of the. Some of her most well-received Tamil renditions include Minnaadhi Minnal for the Tamil dubbed version Bajirao Mastani (2015), Engage Ponaalfor the movie Zero (2016) and Idhayane from the 2017 movie Velaikkaran.

Unnaal Unnaal Un Ninaivaal by Palak Muchhal

Perhaps Bollywood’s most philanthropic playback singer, Palak Muchhal, has sung a number of Tamil songs, including Unnaal Unnaal Un Ninaivaal (composed by Amaal Malik) for the Tamil version of the movie M S Dhoni (2016).

It goes without saying that regardless of their native language and culture, these artists have transcended their limitations as a vocalist of any particular language or industry. They have continued to demonstrate how art is art regardless of its language of expression.
