For a town that holds the most beautiful vistas and people so close to Kohima, it is surprising how very few people know about it. That may be because it requires the strongest wanderlust to uncover this hidden treasure amidst the rice terraces of Nagaland.

The town, located 70 km from Kohima, is inhabited by the Chakesang Naga tribals. These simple folks, with their distinct language and lifestyle render the town with an enchanting ambience.

The mornings open upon a green valley, with hills that meet the horizon and a thick mist that holds to the mountain side, well into the afternoon sun. The pleasing sight is one which will be ingrained in your minds forever.

One can arrive on the best panorama from the Glory Peak at 8530 feet above sea level. On top of the peak, there is a flat meadow. There is a tree house in a corner of the meadow, with views opening upto Himalayas and Saramati range.

A few kilometres from Pfutsero is a Second World War cave which was used by the Japanese on their way to claim parts of Indian territory. Along with the huge Baptist church in the centre of the town, these two sites make an exciting visit to relive some bits of history.

The locals speak the tribal languages of Khezha and Chokri, but are conversant in English too. They are friendly folks and welcoming of any wayfaring traveller. The staple meals of rice and meat are available at wayside stalls. One cannot come away from Pfutsero without trying the locally brewed rice beer, the best of which is available in the homes of tribals.

The best way to reach Pfutsero is to share a cab from Kohima. The private taxis can be a bit expensive, and the share rides in the jeep are comfortable on the hilly rugged roads. The best time to visit the town is before the monsoon sets in May and after the winter months, as the mercury drops here to extreme levels.

So, escape to this little known idyllic town for a true travel diary story.
