A few hits, a few misses

All the songs from Bharat are finally out, and that means we can take an in-depth look at the soundtrack. Composed by Vishal and Shekhar, this album consists of 9 tracks, while its lyrics have been penned by Irshad Kamil. The film is ready to be released across theatres in India on June 5.

The album opens with Slow Motion, which was also the first song to be released by the makers. Sung by Nakash Aziz and Shreya Ghoshal, it’s got quirky lyrics and admirable vocals. More importantly, the song has a catchy hook, which ends up being its main appeal.

Chashni, sung by Abhijeet Srivastava, is a love ballad that impresses through and through with its simplicity. Irshad Kamil’s brilliant lyrics are the main strength of this song. A version sung by Neha Bhasin also appears later on in the album, and takes the song to a whole new level.

Aithey Aa has been composed like a classic wedding song, with heavy use of dholak and shehnai. With energetic vocals from Akasa Singh, Neeti Mohan and Kamaal Khan, and spunky lyrics from Kamil, Aithey Aa easily manages to create a party atmosphere.

Vishal Dadlani croons Zinda, a short track that only impresses with its catchy hook. This track has been composed by Julius Packiam and the film’s director, Ali Abbas Zafar, while its lyrics too have been written by the latter. It’s sort of an anthem that presents a tribute to the film’s lead character.

Turpeya is sung by Sukhwinder Singh, and is a mediocre number that brings the graph of this album down. The composition doesn’t quite match the mood of the lyrics. Aaya Na Tu suffers from a similar fate. It doesn’t quite manage to grow on you despite multiple listenings.

Thap Thap is one more Sukwinder Singh track in this soundtrack. It’s a great composition filled with guitar riffs and dhols. However, Kamil’s lyrics convey a completely different tone, which ends up creating a mismatch of sorts.

Bharat is a decent album from Vishal-Shekhar that has a few songs in it worthy of becoming big hits. This album’s success will also largely depend upon how the film is received at the box office. It’s slated to release on June 5.
