Ankit Singh Patial is better known as Ikka Singh in the Indian music scene. He has made a name for himself as a rapper who prefers to write in Punjabi as well as Hindi. His talent has led him to enter Bollywood as well, but his career still remains sort of unrecognized in the mainstream music scene. Which begs the question, is Ikka Singh an underrated rapper?

While most of his conventional tracks have become big hits, like Theek Hai Theek Hai and Half Window Down, his other songs like Nau Sau Bai are far better in quality than those. Although a strong influence of Bohemia’s rapping style can be spotted easily in it, there’s quite some originality to the music here.

Back in November 2014, his song Negative came to the fore, and turned into another big hit for him. The lines “Nahi main reh sakta negative soch ke sath, jo aapke sath nahi aise dost ke saath. Jo kuch bhi hoga sochunga uske baad, nahi mila mujhe negativity se araam yaahan” really do hit home.

Another Ikka Singh song with deep lyrics is called Sapne, and as its name suggests, it’s about people who dream about doing something in their lives. Lines like “Mujhe kaha sabne, kabhi na honge poore mere sapne. Bas khade reh saath mere kuch apne. Log dekh meri success lage khapne. Meri lifestyle, jeene ke dhang alag, mere sir pe hath rakha rab ne” really drive the point home. Produced by Nickk. B Sanj, it was presented under the Panasonic Mobile MTV Spoken Word program.

As we’ve seen in these few songs, it’s the well written lyrics that form the backbone of Ikka Singh’s music. However, his rapping style changes its influences every now and then. Most recently, we could spot a heavy influence of Vivian Divine’s music in the song Theek Hai Theek Hai. The Mumbai street language and delivery of the verses are both similar to the style with which Divine raps.

However, this doesn’t take away his penchant for writing good raps. With people like Badshah and Raftaar achieving so much success these days, it’s quite surprising to not see Ikka Sing’s name alongside them.
