Did You Know There Is An Amazon-Like Waterfall In Maharashtra

Tucked near a small village of Bhira near the Pune-Mumbai expressway, is a dense forest that hides the Devkund waterfall. The gushing water falls into an emerald lake surrounded by dense canopy and green hills. The picturesque scene will remind you of a landscape from Amazon.

Devkund is a type of ‘plunge’ waterfall. This means that the waterfall seems to hang in air, as the rushing waters have eroded the rocky wall and fall directly into the lake, like a shower from heaven.

Devkund is a confluence of three waterfalls, and is said to be the origin of Kundalika river. You can reach the waterfall after a 3 hours trek from base village of Bhira, along the dam backwater and through forest. A major part of the trek takes you through some of the densest deciduous forest. The trail is made more enchanting with the river running parallel to the track. Sometime you have to cross over on the river.

This walk through the forest is what reminds many of Amazon. Close to the popular Tamhini ghat, Devkund is often looked over by Sahyadri trekkers. But it is for this reason that every local trekker must have it on their monsoon bucket-list. Very little human intervention provides a rare solitude on this trail.

Another route to Devkund is to trek down the plus valley in Tamhini, and emerge on the other side, which is the top of the Devkund waterfall. The route through Bhira takes you to the lake at the bottom of the fall. While the latter is a longer route of 3 hours, the former is a more arduous route, and recommended for experienced trekkers.

At Bhira, you can also take the assistance of a local guide for the trek. This is also a good place to arrange your meals, as little is available enroute or the at the waterfall. You can reach Bhira via Mumbai or Pune by road. Devkund is accessible for trekking throughout the year, but the place turns into a paradise during monsoon.
