If you have ever undertaken a train journey through the Konkan Ghats to or from Goa, you must have waited with everyone else on board for the mesmerising site of the Dudhsagar fall. It is so named because the gushing water looks like a cascade of milk.
But have you ever got off the train at Kulem or Castle rock station to trek through the Braganza Hills?
Located amidst the thick of Western Ghats, Braganza hills is a spot of lush forests and virgin forests. The longest trek circuit in this region is from Castle rock railway station to the base of the waterfall. It passes through dense forests and smaller waterfalls within Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary.You can also undertake shorter and easier routes to the fall from Kulem and Sonaulim stations.
All the trails boast of a rich flora and fauna. It is a paradise for photographers and nature lovers. The dense deciduous forest hosts some rare endemic creatures in its fold like nilgai, purple frog, greater hornbill and many other species. A walk through this region affords an experience no lesser than an excursion to the Amazon.
One can camp at the Dudhsagar Station, as camping is allowed here. It is advisable to carry your tents and sleeping bags along.
The specialty of this location including the Dudhsagar falls is it is only connected by the railroad. There is absolutely no road connectivity. There is little in the way of accommodation, which is probably the reason why nature has been preserved in its raw form.
So, experience nature at its best in the Braganza Hills of Western Ghats.
