Araku Valley

Living Root bridges

True to its name it is a bridge that is naturally formed with roots, deep within the confines of Cherrapunji. It is the roots of the Indian rubber tree that forms these bridges. In order to make a rubber tree’s roots grow in the right direction the people simply pull the roots of the trees and twist and tie them to merge with each other, till they form the desired architectural structure over time.
