Shoghi is a lesser-known destination for adventure seekers

 

Tucked away about 7 kms from Shimla, on the Kalka-Shimla Highway, this heavenly paradise Shoghi makes a perfect getaway from the busy lives of crowded cities. The road to Shoghi itself is serene and devoid of loud traffic found on other Indian highways. As you approach the village, the road becomes steeper and the path literally leads you to the clouds.

The history of Shoghi dates back to the 19th century, during the time of the Anglo-Gurkha War. Away from the city rush of Shimla, Shoghi has open spaces and attractive panoramic views of forests, hills and valley. The cool climate that remains prevelant around the year makes it an ideal camping place. It is also a heaven for bird-watchers and photography enthusiasts.

The Jakhu temple located on top of the hills, is considered to be the highest mountain peak in Shimla, and is renowned for its coloured wall paintings, which depict scenes from the Hindu mythology.

Located at 8500 ft above sea level, the Kali Temple is a stone structure which is more than 150 years old and houses idols of Hindu Goddess that is idols of Goddess Kali, Chandi and Shyamala. The natural surroundings make it an attractive site.

Given its forests and terrain, Shoghi is ideal for modest nature walks as well as elaborate trekking trails. For adventure seekers, Shoghi offers rappelling, rock climbing, valley crossing, and commando rope walking. The unique terrain and the pleasant weather make adventure activities a real delight here.

Another site in the vicinity is the Viceregal Lodge. It is a perfect place for history lovers. Built in 1888, this six-storey building constructed in Scottish Baronial style once served as the residence of Lord Dufferin, the British Viceroy of India.

A good way to arrive at Shoghi is by a toy train from Kalka

The nearest airport is in Chandigarh Airport which is 113 kilometers away from Shoghi. Shoghi is well connected to other major cities of the country via regular trains to Kalka. From Kalka, the best way to reach Shoghi is by taking Toy Train which is more than 100 years old world heritage site and is famous from its 113 tunnels.
