Manali is the base stop for many mountain lovers. Whether it is adventure sports or trekking into the Himalayas, or relaxing in a homestay perched on the mountainside, Manali is what comes to the mind first. But the destination has become quite crowded with so many travellers heading there.

So, if you are looking for a more secluded and peaceful spot, then Chakrata should be your bet. Just 98 kilometers from Dehradun, Chakrata is surrounded by virgin forests, serene landscapes and bathed in the crisp mountain air at an elevation of 7500 feet.

Deodar, Himalayan oak and rhododendron turn the hillsides into a painter’s canvas. Just sipping warm chai, with your feet up is enough to rejuvenate any tired soul. But there is lots to do in this pretty little town.

You can visit the majestic Tiger Falls. You can take a pooled jeep from the town to the waterfall. You can also take a route, that involves a 20 km trek. This can be arduous, and only frequent trekkers should attempt it. But even if you arrive by road, the waterfall is an amazing sight. If youare trekking, you should eat your fill at a small tea shop before the trail, as there is nothing in way of eatery once you start trekking towards the waterfall.

You can also visit Darun Deob, which is 10,000 feet above sea level. It is an easy hike from the town. It is an extensive dense jungle with villages of the Jaunsari tribe studded around the area. With complete silence, all around only thing we could hear was chirping of birds. Birders should keep an eye out to spot Himalayan Woodpeckers, white collared blackbirds, Brown Dipper and Green Backed tit.

Another attraction that you must try at Chakrata is star gazing. You should opt to stay one night in an open-air campsite, which has comfortable tents. Then you could spend the night, gazing at the milky way. With no habitation in the vicinity, the sky lights up in all its glory here.

The town has very few options for accommodation, like Himalayan Paradise, Uttarayan and Rana Lodge. The town closes early for the night. You can reach Chakrata by driving from Dehra Dun via Haridwar.

So, if you want a peaceful mountain experience, without the bustling crowds, your next stop should be Chakrata.
