Often, we plan a trip, book tickets and make reservations, but then it all goes into a quarry when we change jobs. We get palpitations about whether the new boss will allow you the leave? What will be the impression you will create by asking for leave so early? Will it affect your work reputation? And what if you lose the race to other new recruits?

But there is always a good way to ask for leave, even when you are new in a job. While many may advise that it is better not to ask for leave during your probation period, yet, there is a good way to go about it.

Will You Be Missing Something Important?

As a new employee, the last thing you want to do is book a vacation during the busiest time of year or find out that your days off conflict with a critical meeting. So, the best thing to do is start with a little research before you head off for a leave. You should also see whether your company culture allows this.

When Should You Speak To The Boss?

After checking with fellow employees about how any important meetings, busy schedules and company culture, the ideal thing would be to speak to the boss. You can ask them whether the days of intended leave fall on any critical days. This will also show the boss that you are serious about your work and committed towards it.

“You should be proactive in speaking to your boss about a leave. You should plan in advance and apply when you feel the time is right. The boss and HR know that emergencies don’t occur very frequently, and so, speak to them in advance, instead of waiting till the last minute,” says Ankit Avlani, Team Lead at Knowledge Units LLP.

If your boss is intimidating, and you think it would be difficult to broach the topic with them, then time it right. Like after you have completed a great presentation or filed in a good report before the deadline or offered a solution to some problem facing the team. In this way, you can leverage your advantage at the right time.

Why You Should Not Disconnect Completely On Leave?

Every workplace has a different expectation when it comes to staying connected on vacation. It is best to ask your boss ahead of time what they need from you before you leave the office and what they expect while you are out of town. If you did not have this conversation with your boss before you left, play it safe. Respond to important or time-sensitive office emails as best as you can, even if it means setting aside a few minutes each morning and evening for a little work.

Despite all these approaches, it is better to speak to the HR about any impending leaves after you land the job offer. If you end up accepting the job, you will want to make sure that you have started your employment off on the right foot. So, it is better to be realistic and polite about your leave. But it does not mean you cannot enjoy a short vacation just because you are in a new job.
