Three Things To Consider Before You Invite Your Friend To Join Your Organisation

Should you tell a job-hunting friend that your company is hiring?

Many times, when a school or college friend is hunting for a job in the same industry as yours, it may be tempting to suggest when your company is hiring too. But beware as this may come with some risks.

It can be great fun to have a friend at work. You can take coffee breaks and meals together or plan to do things together after work. Though it may seem thrilling, having a friend in the same organisation can have its risks too. When the friend makes a mistake, some colleagues may put the blame on you. And if the friend is really inefficient at work, you too will be laden with guilt.

Irfan K, Manager at a Security Firm, says, “I will see whether my friend’s experience matches the job profile. Even the salary package offered is important. I will consider these factors before recommending him the job.”

So, here are some things to keep in mind before you tell your friend about a vacancy at your workplace.

Will You Be Maintain Professional-Personal Boundary With This Friend?

If this place starts working at your place, will you be able to maintain limits at work. For instance, if the friend starts making pushing his or her work on you, or starts making mistakes, you should be able to maintain a professional relationship. You should be able to convey that the person needs to start taking the weight of their responsibility, like any other colleague or team member.

Will You Be Able To Handle The Situation Of Competition With The Friend?

In any workplace, there is scope for healthy competition. So, it is important to consider whether the workplace dynamics will not ruin your relationship. You should be able to work with the friend, even if office politics envisions that one of you may be promoted over the other.

Will Your Friend Fit In With The Team Culture?

If the position is for someone who works closely with your team, it is important that your friend fits in with the work culture. Though there is a possibility of anyone joining the team, if your friend joins, and is not a match to the team culture, you yourself could be alienated because of the influence of association.

Consider these factors before you ask a friend to join your organisation.
