Emotional Intelligence is one of the most sought after ability that employers look for in their ideal candidates. By simple definition, emotional intelligence or emotional quotient (EQ) is the ability to apply and manage one’s own emotions to guide their actions towards desired goals. In simpler words, it is how you use your emotional information to achieve your goals. Emotional intelligence helps you do a lot of things, especially in a work environment. From building stronger relationships to achieving your targets, EQ can help go a long way. Here are the four attributes of Emotional Intelligence-

Self-Awareness – Knowing Yourself

There’s no use of being knowledgeable and skilled if you are not first self-aware. This attribute of EQ helps you recognize your own emotions and understand how they affect your thoughts and behaviour. It means being aware of your strengths and weaknesses. Being self-aware boosts your confidence and increases the chances of success. You are also more likely to give your BEST when you are self-aware.

Self-Management – Control And Influence

You have to first learn to manage yourself before managing the others.

If you are emotionally intelligent, you’d be capable of managing your emotional reactions to situations as well as people. It is your power of controlling any impulsive behaviour and work according to the plans. This attribute will help you keep your commitments, take new initiatives, understand your clients as well as your colleagues, and consequently, influence their actions as well.

Social Awareness – Knowing The People

You will yourself feel more comfortable socially.

Being socially aware is not about general knowledge and gossips. It is about understanding and relating with other people’s emotions, needs, and concerns. In order to have a great EQ, you must harness the skill called empathy. Social awareness is all about empathy- the ability to feel what others are feeling. A person with good EQ will always pick on emotional cues of others and try to act accordingly.

The last attribute is Relationship Management. It is one of the most important attributes and we will talk about it separately in tomorrow’s article.
